Fred was killed in an explosion possibly caused by Augustus Rookwood. One of the last things Fred heard before dying was Percy joking about resigning from the Ministry. Percy wouldn't leave Fred's side until Harry and Ron helped him move the body to somewhere safer, coincidentally behind a suit of armor.
Although not mentioned in the novel, Rowling said in a web chat that George never does fully get over Fred's death. However, he goes on with his life, turning Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes into a "money spinner" with Ron. George later names his first child with Angelina Johnson after his twin.

Seeing Ron at his most vulnerable and experiencing such a harrowing moment is a lot for fans and his friends to witness. Surrounded by his equally heartbroken family, Ron cries and cradles Fred's body.
In Fred's last film line, he responds to George's question about him being OK and says, "Yeah." Fred and George are standing side by side getting ready to fight, and the next time Fred is shown on screen, he's already dead.
Voldemort summons Snape to the Shrieking Shack. Erroneously believing Snape is the master of the Elder Wand and that Snape's death will make him the master of the Wand, Voldemort kills Snape by having his pet snake Nagini bite him through the neck.
