In the novel, Greene is murdered shortly afterward by Al Neri. At the end of the film, Michael has Greene killed as part of his slaughter of the Corleone family's enemies. Neri surprises Greene while he is getting a massage and shoots him through the eye.
2. Casino mogul Moe Greene's life and death mimics real-life mobster Bugsy Siegel's. In The Godfather, Moe Greene is credited with putting Las Vegas on the map. In reality, it was Jewish mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, who built the Flamingo, now the oldest resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
Although Fredo was greatly influenced by the city and Greene, family heir Michael Corleone disapproved of the effect it had on his brother, whom Greene reportedly chastised and slapped around in public - Moe claimed that Freddie had been disrupting the business by cavorting with cocktail waitresses, often keeping them ...
Fredo later betrays Michael after being approached by Johnny Ola (Dominic Chianese), an associate of rival crime boss Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg). Ola and Roth tell Fredo that Michael is being particularly difficult in business negotiations between Roth's organization and the Corleone family.
Although he respects Michael Corleone, Tessio does not trust him to protect the Corleone Family's interests after Don Vito's death. In order to lay the foundation for his own crime Family, Tessio arranges a peace summit between Michael and Don Barzini, knowing that the latter will murder Michael there.
Roth secretly plans to assassinate Michael, partly to avenge Moe Greene's murder (as depicted in The Godfather). Roth instructs Ola to befriend Michael's brother Fredo, who provides Ola (and Roth) information about Michael that enables them to make an attempt on his life.
Roth arrives at the airport and prepares to be taken into Federal Custody in the U.S. Minutes after getting off the plane, he is shot point-blank by Corleone caporegime Rocco Lampone, who was posing as a reporter. Rocco was then shot and killed by federal officers as he was running away.
As Fredo prays the Hail Mary (which he claimed brought him luck whilst fishing), Neri shoots him in the back of the head, not knowing that Anthony was watching from his bedroom window.
Hyman Roth was a Jewish mobster and business associate of both Vito and Michael Corleone. His character was inspired by real-life mobster Meyer Lansky. He first met Vito Corleone in the 1920s when he was working as an auto mechanic in Little Italy.
The third and final film in the Godfather saga, The Godfather: Part III, set in 1979, explains that Hagen had died a few years earlier. His son, Andrew, is ordained to the priesthood, and is assigned to the Vatican on Michael's recommendation. While talking with Andrew, Michael remembers Hagen fondly as a great lawyer.
Both Greene's character and personality are based on Bugsy Siegel: his affiliation with the mob in Los Angeles, his involvement in the development of Las Vegas, and his flamboyant tendencies.
Fredo betrayed his brother to rival gangster Hyman Roth, who used him as a pawn in a plot to destroy the Corleone Family. Fredo provided unspecified information on the Corleone family in return for receiving compensation (what kind is never specified) independently of the family.
The five Mafia families in New York City are still active, albeit less powerful. The peak of the Mafia in the United States was during the 1940s, and the 1950s, until the year 1970 when the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO Act) was enacted.
Fredo's betrayal and subsequent demise in The Godfather Part II was due to his resentment towards Michael for being passed over. The decision to kill off Fredo was not originally in Mario Puzo's novels, but added by director Coppola for emotional impact.
Most noteworthy, the novel depicts Clemenza's fatal heart attack (mentioned in The Godfather Part II), and the many conspiracy theories that he had actually been murdered by the Rosato Brothers, former Corleone soldiers who had formed their own gang after a dispute over the future of the family.
Concept and Creation. Vito Corleone is based on a composite of mid-20th-century New York Mafia figures Carlo Gambino, Frank Costello, Joe Bonanno, and Joe Profaci. Mario told me that all of the great dialogue, those quotable lines he put into the mouth of Don Corleone, were actually spoken by Mario's mother.
So (because this is getting lengthy), I'll end it here: Why did Hyman Roth give the order to kill Frank Pentangeli? Because he needed a snitch to testify against Corleone. What advantage would that give him? Roth's intention was to put Corleone away for life (since he couldn't kill him).
Michael publicly appears to forgive Fredo, but later has him killed after Connie organizes a visit for Kay behind Michael's back which breaks the agreement. Connie later says that Fredo had drowned, feigning ignorance of the truth. After Michael and Kay's divorce, Connie helps care for Michael's children.
Ultimately, Tessio betrays Michael by helping arrange his assassination at a peace summit with Barzini and Philip Tattaglia. The summit will be held in Tessio's fiefdom in Brooklyn, where Michael will presumably be safe. In return, Tessio was to inherit the Corleone family upon Michael's death.
A rift grows between Pentangeli and Michael, however, that eventually results in Pentangeli betraying the family. Pentangeli's character was created in The Godfather Part II by Coppola and Puzo due to actor Richard Castellano not reprising his role as Clemenza in the sequel.
During a New Year's Eve party at Batista's mansion, Fredo drunkenly tells Patrick Geary that Ola had taken him to a nightclub in Las Vegas, thus proving that they know each other, and that Fredo betrayed his brother to Roth. Michael orders his bodyguard to kill Ola and Roth.
