Creature designer Ken Barthelmey designed the Grievers for the film. In late 2012, director Wes Ball hired him to work on the design. Barthelmey created a test design that he presented to director Wes Ball. Impressed by Barthelmey's work, Ball asked him to add a mechanical scorpion tail to the design.
The Grievers are cyborg-like creatures resembling both slugs and spiders. They were artificially created by WCKD for their labyrinths. In the movies, their bodies are long, green, and slimy and have four mechanical legs as well as a robotic tail with a gripper at the end that can throw anything like Gladers.
The mazes in the Maze Runner series serve as a central element of the Trials created by the organization known as WICKED. These mazes are designed to test the abilities and resilience of the Gladers, a group of young individuals who find themselves trapped within the maze.
The Grievers' purpose is to hunt down and kill the Gladers as part of the Trials, to test which ones are suitable for creating a cure for the Flare virus that threatens the human race. Grievers can "sting" Gladers, or prick them, which causes extreme pain for up to days or weeks.
Like Thomas, Gally sacrifices himself on the night of the Grievers' first raid so that no one else would be killed. Although Gally may have seemed selfish and arrogant for most of the novel, this sacrifice is an act of redemption that makes up for his past behaviors.

Why does Thomas purposely get stung by a Griever?
They've discovered that the Maze spells out six repeating words: FLOAT, CATCH, BLEED, DEATH, STIFF, and PUSH. Thomas decides to get stung by a Griever and go through the Changing so that he can regain his memories and hopefully understand the code.
Alby arrives, calling the Runner Minho. Minho sends Alby to get him water and refuses to answer any of Thomas' questions. When Alby returns with water, Minho tells them that he found a dead Griever in the Maze.
Newt gets scratched by one of the Cranks on his right forearm, consequently infecting him with the virus. How does Newt get infected on Maze Runner? So of the guys who were originally in the Glade in the books, most of them were already immune to the Flare.
Gally used the small mechanical device that was found in the dead Griever body. We know this because when Gally appears at the end he is holding it. This mechanical device opens the doors because it used to be in a Griever, which is how Grievers would get around.
Plus, with Thomas unable to get the "cure" to Newt in time to save his life, Thomas doesn't have much personal incentive to help resolve the pandemic, since everyone else he cares about is immune.
Newt reveals that the reason WCKD put him in the Maze was because they wanted to tell the difference between immunes like Thomas and people like himself. Thomas tells Newt that he can cure him.
Gally is alive in Maze Runner: The Death Cure because he was rescued and saved after The Maze Runner's ending. Although the Gladers thought that he was already dead, Gally confirms that they left him to die. It was after they left that another group stumbled across the maze and laboratory and found Gally still inside.
This virus was created by the Post-Flares Coalition as a means of population control. With most human society bound to fall in a state of disarray after the apocalyptic 2136 Solar Flares, the Coalition took it upon themselves to create the Flare Virus to painlessly kill the survivors.
Sometime after being left behind in the WCKD lab by the Gladers, Gally is found still lying on the floor with the spear still in his chest by a crew, who, after discovering that he is immune to the Flare, pull the spear out of his chest and take him to the Last City to meet their leader, a Crank named Lawrence, who ...
It is eventually revealed that Thomas' blood contains a unique enzyme that can destroy the Flare virus [2]. In "The Death Cure" film, Teresa, one of the main characters, uses a small fragment of Thomas' blood and observes under a microscope that it snaps a dark-red vein with the virus in it, effectively killing it [2].
Grievers are huge, slimy, bug-like creatures in form which are part-machine, part-animal, which are generally seen only at night. If gladers are stung by grievers, they are in for weird consequences such as convulsions and glimpses of their past life, the memories of which had been wiped away.
Gally's hatred of Thomas is ultimately driven by an unwavering commitment to rules and safety, as well as a deep desire to uncover the truth of the Gladers' circumstances.
Thomas tells the Keepers that he and Teresa were manipulated into designing the Maze because they share the gift of telepathy. He convinces the others that he and Teresa are now in as much danger as them, but he knows the way out. Thomas tells them in order to escape, they have to jump through the Griever Hole.
How many Gladers survived and made it into the Griever hole?
One by one, Gladers drop down through the Griever Hole—first Minho, then Newt, Frypan, Winston, and others, until there are 21 in all. The other half of the Gladers on the mission were killed by Grievers.
The disease eats away the minds of the afflicted until they turn into Cranks, zombie-like creatures that roam cities killing people until they're killed themselves. Fortunately for Thomas, he and most of his friends are Munies — immune to the Flare. That's why they've been put through the Maze and the Scorch trials.
However, none of the Maze Runner movies ever explain why WCKD sent Teresa into the Maze. It seems improbable that she betrayed WCKD since she defends them fervently. In Maze Runner 4, the story could provide clarity about whether Teresa went into the Maze voluntarily and the purpose of her presence.
The book reveals that Newt is not immune to the Flare virus and is slowly succumbing to its influence. Eventually, he begs his best friend, Thomas, to save him from the virus inside him via euthanasia, which Thomas does.
Thomas, Newt, Gally, and Teresa all head toward the facility. Gally goes to find a serum and the immune children while the others go look for Minho. They find and free him, and they head to escape, but are found by Janson and several guards.
The leader of the infected people, also known as Cranks, is Jorge. After an altercation between Minho and Jorge, Thomas has a private conversation with Jorge, and they decide not to kill Minho but instead cut a finger off each hand.
The screams are from a boy named Ben; he was stung by a Griever, one of the monsters that lives in the Maze. After receiving an antidote called Grief Serum, Ben is going through “the Changing,” a painful process during which the victim is flooded with memories of his life before the Maze.
