After he escaped an assassination attempt by the Joker, Ramirez put Dent into the back of a car with Michael Wuertz, who was also working for Maroni. Ramirez then picked up Rachel Dawes and delivered her to Maroni, not knowing that they would put her in a room full of oil barrels and blow her up.
At one point, the Joker (Heath Ledger) attacks Rachel at Dent's fundraiser, holding her at knifepoint. Batman arrives and fights off the men, but the Joker grabs Rachel and throws her from the skyscraper window. Batman jumps out the window after her, breaking their fall on a car below.
Katie Holmes was replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes in "The Dark Knight," but her exit was due to personal preference, not creative differences. Holmes left to explore other roles and appeared in the movie "Mad Money" instead.
But in actuality, The Joker has used Bruce's love for Rachel as an Achilles' Heel, and it leads him to being tricked into really saving Harvey. When time runs out, Batman barely saves Harvey Dent from dying, and the explosion catches a trail of gasoline and burns half of Harvey's face, scarring it for life.
Ramirez was spared her life, but was knocked unconscious. She is last seen when Gordon smashes the Bat-Signal (in order to keep the charade that Batman was responsible for Dent's death and the killings beforehand).
However, Gordon later receives a call saying Dent never made it home, and immediately heads to the Gotham Central Police Department to interrogate the Joker. The Joker reveals it was a cop on Sal Maroni's payroll that kidnapped Dent, and claims that, depending on the current time, Dent could be in one spot, or several.
After gathering up his forces to fight the Justice League, the Batman Who Laughs fought against the Justice League and was killed by Wonder Woman using a chainsaw built using parts of the Invisible Jet.
In an attempt to dissuade Bruce, Alfred finally reveals to him that Rachel chose Dent and that he burned the letter in order to spare Bruce the pain. This revelation puts a severe strain on Bruce's relationship with Alfred, who leaves Wayne Manor when Bruce decides to continue as Batman.
I'm going to marry Harvey Dent. I love him, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. When I told you that if Gotham no longer needed Batman we could be together, I meant it. But now I'm sure the day won't come when *you* no longer need Batman.
While there's no doubt that the Joker tricked Batman into choosing who would die and thus lied about where Rachel was, there's another reason why the Joker had Batman save Harvey Dent.
Rachel meets up with Bruce the morning after, having seen how he'd changed into a better man. She confesses her love for him, but says that as long as Batman is around, there would always be distance between them.
According to Nolan, there was no deeper motivation behind recasting the role — Holmes simply wasn't available. "Katie wasn't available for the role, which I wasn't very happy about, but these things happen, and I was very, very fortunate that Maggie [Gyllenhaal] was able to take it over," the filmmaker said.
Rigging it to explode, Joker planned to test Batman on whether he'd save Harvey or Rachel. While in custody, Joker gave the address as the place where Harvey Dent was being kept. Believing the clown to have told them the truth, Gordon mobilized the GCPD to get to the location before it exploded.
After serving 14 years in prison, Chill makes a deal to receive parole in return for testifying against his onetime cellmate, mob boss Carmine Falcone. As Chill is escorted out of the courthouse, he is shot and killed by one of Falcone's assassins, depriving Bruce Wayne of his chance to seek revenge.
Conversation. [ #TheBatman MINOR SPOILERS ] Bruce Wayne is confronted by an anonymous, angry citizen at the mayor's funeral. This man, played by Douglas Russell, is one of Riddler's followers, who call themselves the "Bitter Nobodies." It's a name that reflects how society has treated them.
Alfred told Bruce about the letter that Rachel left for him, which stated that they wouldn't end up together. In The Dark Knight Rises, Alfred read and then burned the letter. He didn't want it to cause Bruce any pain, but this turned out to be a mistake as Bruce didn't believe him after he'd confessed.
However, when Alfred returned to the Florence Restaurant, he looked across to see Bruce dining with Selina Kyle, they exchanged smiles to one another, and nodded. At that point, Alfred left both happy and joyful that Bruce was alive, that he had finally found peace, and had started a family.
Harvey became Two-Face due to a combination of Maroni's scarring, untreated mental illness, marital stress and his own personal choices. But one has to wonder if Batman and Gordon ever lay awake at night haunted by the role they played in Harvey's downfall.
Batman then laments that by turning Dent into Two-Face he won because if the city ever finds out that Dent was a murderer the hope he inspired will be lost and the criminal he put away as DA will be released. So Batman decides that he'll take the blame for Two-Face's murders and have Gordon declare him an outlaw.
It is revealed in The Batman Who Laughs miniseries that Laughs has the ability to sense people's urges, which can be used to find what he desires. However, he needs to wear a visor made of Dark Metal in order to focus his senses and pinpoint what he is searching for.
The Batman Who Laughs is defeated when the Prime Universe Batman is aided by the Joker, who notes the alternate Batman's failure to perceive this scenario due to still being a version of Batman.
