Dennis Carradine was a robber who stole money from a fight promoter, the same who gave Peter Parker a job. Since the promoter cheated Parker out of money, the boy didn't stop the criminal, who thanked him while escaping. Searching for a car for the escape, Carradine is assumed to be the one who killed Ben Parker.
Ben was killed when a burglar was robbing their house. Ben accidentally surprised him causing the burglar to shoot him. His death sparked the transformation of Peter Parker into Spider-Man.
Later that night, Ben is shot and killed, seemingly by Dennis Carradine, a robber and carjacker that Peter allowed to escape earlier that day. Peter and his Aunt May mourn for Ben, with Peter being inspired by him to become Spider-Man and going on to accept him as his true father.

Ultimately, Sandman's antagonistic actions were mostly the result of his fear of losing his daughter. However, when he found out that Spider-Man was really Peter Parker, Flint lost all his animosity towards him, realizing that Peter was only opposing him because of what he had unwittingly done to Ben Parker.
While Marko is a career criminal who wreaks havoc on the city and even killed Spiderman's Uncle Ben, his criminal habits turn out to be his way of taking care of his daughter with cancer. Instead of controlling other people's dreams, this Sandman seems caught chasing his own—healing his sick daughter.
