Beta is a fictional character in the comic book series The Walking Dead and the television series of the same name, where he was portrayed by Ryan Hurst. In both universes, Beta is the second-in-command of the Whisperers, a group of survivors who wear walker (zombie) skin to hide their presence from actual walkers.
He could not bring himself to put his friend down and let him roam the hospital as a walker. Beta also decided to wear a ski mask to hide his identity from strangers to preserve his image as an inspiring musician before the apocalypse while descending into a ruthless killer to stay alive.
As Beta is being devoured, Negan is shocked to learn the true identity of the monstrous villain. Earlier this season, it was revealed that Beta was once a famous country singer known as Half Moon.

In the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead, an album cover featuring Half Moon's face was quickly shown before it was destroyed by a group of Walkers. When Beta finally meets his end in Season 10, Negan tells Daryl, "S--t. You know who that a--hole was?" Daryl remarks, "Yeah. Nobody."
In his grief and loneliness, Beta accepts Alpha's invitation to walk with her in the darkness. Though, he doesn't want to leave "him," the walker she killed.
In the episode, streaming now on the AMC website, Beta has a confrontation with Gamma (Thora Birch) that leads to his mask getting torn and part of his face becoming visible. One of the Whisperers recognizes him, saying, "Your voice sounded familiar, but...," only for Beta to kill him to keep his secret.
Post-Apocalypse. The Whisperers were formed sometime in the first three years of the apocalypse by a woman named Hera after she learned that wearing the skin of walkers allowed them to be camouflaged, therefore safe, among the dead.
Robert Balkovich reviewed the tenth season third part premiere "Home Sweet Home" and wrote that "he's a young man who does indeed look incredibly anxious about the danger they've found themselves in. For Elijah, the scary mask he wears is quite literally a cover to shield himself from the outside world.
Alpha frequently brainwashed Lydia into believing that her father was an abusive man while she was the kind parent. It's also implied that Alpha would disregard her daughter if she is killed or captured.
Daryl wakes up in the woods to find that Lydia has nursed him back to health. Alpha, reunited with the Whisperers, vows to exact revenge on the communities with their horde while reiterating the Whisperers' anthem, officially declaring war.
Under Beta's command, the Whisperers get revenge by sending a colossal horde tearing through Rick Grimes' community. AMC's The Walking Dead TV show followed the very same route in season 10, with Negan decapitating Alpha in "Walk With Us."
The woman they meet calls herself Georgie (Jayne Atkinson) and gives Maggie hand drawn blueprints for buildings and machinery such as windmills to allow the Hilltop to thrive after the war. She refers to this as the "Key to the Future" and promises Maggie she will eventually be back.
