In the movie, the demon conduiting the doll is Malthus(The Ram demon). It always had been inhabitating inside the Annabelle doll and is the same demon who possessed Janice(later identified as Annabelle Higgins) in Annabelle:Creation(2017). This demon,Malthus, has been clearly revealed in Annabelle Comes Home(2019).

Irene uses the relic against Maurice, but he grabs it, causing Valak to appear. Similar to Father Noiret, Valak lifts Irene in the air and sets her ablaze. Irene does not burn as Valak realizes she is a descendant of St. Lucy, able to harness the same power associated with the relic.
Hundreds of years later, the monastery was bombed heavily during the events of World War II, releasing the same evil spirit from its imprisonment. The demon had since taken the form of a nun as a means of blending with the other nuns as well as to mock their faith.
Now, the third Conjuring covers the pair's involvement in the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, prompting some to wonder whether it is as scary as the original. Sadly, while The Conjuring 3 does feature some undeniably effective jump scares, it is not as creepy as the original.
A Certified Fresh rating (a first for director James Wan) helps in securing a sequel, a $300 million worldwide box office haul all but guarantees it – and the Conjuring 2 was almost as scary as the original.
What it confirms is that Irene and Lorraine are related in some way, but it leaves things open for exactly how they're connected. Some might think it doesn't rule out them being the same person, but it's very unlikely given what we know.
Cheers, witches! So it'd be ideal if the movie wasn't based on a real story, but sorry! No such luck—the horror flick is indeed inspired by a handful of true events. If you haven't yet seen The Nun because you cherish your ability to fall sleep, allow me to give you a brief recap.

While the doll became a symbol of demons and possession, it didn't have as solid a start as it could have. The demon is quite creepy and does scare the viewer, just like the ominous presence of the doll. But Annabelle didn't innovate as The Conjuring did regarding atmosphere and scares.
