In a tragic turn of events, Osborn kidnapped Spider-Man's girlfriend Gwen Stacy. The Goblin threw her off a bridge and Spider-Man shot a web to save her. Believing he had done so, he reeled her in, only to discover she died after sustaining an extreme whiplash effect.
