Was Quirrell a horcrux?
Professor Quirrell was a temporary type of Horcrux while Voldemort inhabited his body, which is confirmed in the Wizarding World. It is possible that Voldemort created more temporary Horcruxes, such as the animals he possessed while in ghostly form.
He remained alive because of his Horcruxes, but existed in a spectral form as his soul had been driven from his body. In this form, he went into hiding in Albania.
Quirrel couldn't put his hands on Harry without getting burned because he was sharing his body and soul with the spirit of Lord Voldemort at the time, and Lily Potter's death invoked a powerful blood-magic that prevents Voldemort from causing Harry any harm.
It was also this love and protection that meant Quirrell was unable to touch Harry. It would be agony for someone like Quirrell, who was full of hatred and was sharing a soul with Voldemort, to touch someone who had been marked by something so good.

The accuracy of this story is unknown, although it was most likely a deceptive fabrication. The turban possessed an odd smell most likely caused by Voldemort's face. This led to a misconception of Fred and George Weasley that the turban had been stuffed full of garlic to ward off hostile vampires.
