Despite Alice's ever-worsening condition, John decides to leave to take a new job in New York City, and she is mad that John chooses to leave her behind. In his absence, Alice is taken care of by her children and a nurse, Carole.
He is a cancer cell biologist who is career driven, yet loves his wife dearly. John initially refuses to believe his wife's diagnosis, but eventually accepts the reality of the matter and tries to help his wife cope with her disease.
Her husband takes a job at Mayo Clinic out of state as he struggles emotionally with Alice's decline and the reality of their future. At the end of the movie, she has lost much of her ability to communicate and needs 24/7 care which her youngest daughter courageously provides.
In one scene, Alice frantically searches for her phone. In the next scene, John discovers the phone in the freezer. Despite Alice's stating that she was looking for the phone “last night,” John quietly tells Anna: “That was over a month ago.”
“Still Alice” is about how she reacts to her own deterioration–how she constantly reassesses it and figures out how to cope. She doesn't always do it with quiet dignity, which is refreshing; sometimes she even uses the disease to manipulate those around her or get out of a social occasion she'd rather avoid.

When Alice attempts to dress herself, what difficulties does she have? What does John point point out to her. Alice thinks she's putting on a sports bra and John tells her that it is actually underwear.
After a video call with Lydia, Alice inadvertently opens the video with the suicide instructions. With some difficulty, she finds the pills and is about to swallow them, but when she is interrupted by the arrival of her caregiver, she drops the pills on the floor and forgets what she was doing.
