Luke went into hiding after his nephew and apprentice, Ben Solo, turned to the dark side and became Kylo Ren, a warlord of the tyrannical First Order and its leader, Snoke. When Ren killed all of his fellow apprentices and ushered in the fall of the New Republic, Luke felt responsible, and disappeared.
After exiling himself to Ahch-To, Skywalker resolved to die as the last Jedi. Following the destruction of his temple and the students of his Jedi Order in 28 ABY, Skywalker withdrew from the galactic events, going into hiding and cutting himself off from the Force.
Although Luke Skywalker maintained a projection for several minutes, giving all of himself to the Force to allow him to physically interact with his surroundings, the strain cost him his life.

As such, this makes Luke's self-imposed absence from the galaxy even worse. Rather than trying to bring his nephew back to the light or going to speak with Leia and Han, Luke seemingly chose to remain in his guilt and shame for six years before the events of The Force Awakens and the arrival of Rey.
It is revealed that Ren is the son of Han and Leia, originally named Ben, and was once one of Luke's Jedi pupils. He was corrupted to the dark side of the Force by the First Order's Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), and helped destroy Luke's new Jedi Academy.
