Maul arrives on Tatooineseeking revenge against his nemesis, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ezra, meanwhile, heads to the desert planet hoping to reach the Jedi Master first.
Ultimately though, Maul remained driven by the desire for revenge, specifically against Sidious, the Master who disowned him, and Kenobi, the Jedi who defeated him.
Although Obi-Wan was caught off guard by a Force push from Maul, he was clearly more than a match for the Sith apprentice. In fact, Maul trying to throw Obi-Wan into Naboo's melting pit shows he himself wasn't confident in his ability to best Kenobi with a lightsaber.
After a thousand years in the shadows, Maul was the first Sith to reveal himself and kill a Jedi Master. So, assuming the fight was over, he may have dropped his guard. Because of this, he couldn't sense that Obi-Wan was planning to jump behind him, and it ended up costing him the fight.
Summary. Obi-Wan Kenobi used the dark side of the Force in his victories against Darth Maul and Anakin Skywalker. In The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan's emotions take over as he fights Darth Maul out of anger and grief.

Did Maul respect Obi-Wan?
Respect. While this may come as a surprise, the two actually respected one another. This is shown immensely during their final duel on Tattooine in Star Wars Rebels. Maul always wanted to get his complete revenge on Obi-Wan in an honorable way.
Originally, Maul wanted to destroy the Jedi, but after being maimed on Naboo, his focus turned to Obi-Wan and Darth Sidious. His injuries left him to live in a state of hate while questing for revenge. That way of life was shown through his eyes, and he taught his brother to behave in the same way.
He can feel Obi-Wan Kenobi's presence in his mind's eye, but searching an entire planet for a man who doesn't want to be found has proven to be far more difficult than Maul expected. In exasperation and rage, Maul cries out Kenobi's name.
When he dies in Rebels you see Obi-wan holding the dying body of Maul. This is supposed to represent that he's gone beyond hatred or anger towards Maul, and instead feel pity that it had to end this way.
But what is important is that Maul survived, and he did so because of his hate specifically for Kenobi. Just as Zuko's firebending was fueled by his drive to catch the Avatar, Maul's survival is made possible because of his specific drive for revenge against Kenobi.
So Maul vs Kylo. In terms of physical ability Maul is far physically superior being able to handle the strength of Savage Opress and overpower the strong style of Qui Gon Jinn. His durability involves being able to be cut in half and a pain tolerance so high he can flinch of weaker force lightening like nothing .
It's already been shown in the source material… more than once… that Darth Maul is not on Darth Sidious's level. Every time he dueled Sidious as his apprentice (in Legends) he got easily defeated. In the show Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Palpatine takes on Darth Maul and Savage Opress simultaneously.
By the time of Episode 3; Anakin is in his prime, and already one of the Jedi Order's most powerful “masters” (although technically still a knight), just behind Obi-Wan, Windu, and Yoda. Maul wouldn't stand a chance.
Sidious revealed to Maul that he did not intend to kill his former apprentice, as he still had use for Maul; it was Sidious' hope that Maul would lead the Sith to Mother Talzin, Maul's mother and the leader of the Nightsisters, so she could be eliminated as a potential threat to the eventual Sith rule of the galaxy.
Seeing his Master murdered caused Obi-Wan to press his attack aggressively, catching Darth Maul off guard. When Maul regained his composure he was able to Force-push Obi-Wan into a melting pit, where he held on for dear life. Calming himself, Obi-Wan leaped over Maul and used Qui-Gon's lightsaber to sever Maul in two.
After a period of tension, Maul strikes first but is quickly countered and defeated by Kenobi. Before Maul dies, Kenobi stays by his side and reveals to him that he is watching over whom he believes is the Chosen One, with Maul's last words being, "He will avenge us". Ezra and Chopper return to base on Maul's ship.
Dissecting the short fight, Obi-Wan used the same moves Qui-Gon Jinn did during their battle in The Phantom Menace, tricking Maul into executing the same parry he did before. However, instead of committing the fatal error his master did, Obi-Wan pivoted and hit Maul in the body, killing him.
Maul pretty easily had beaten Obi wan and Qui Gon IN A 1v2. He had obi wan defeated but Obi Wan's plot armor made Maul just stand still while Obi wan jumped 20 ft and did 15 flips (evidence for plot armor: Anakin did the same thing in a less difficult circumstance and got sliced).
He has an intense rivalry with evil Obi-Wan Kenobi as Obi-Wan started the rivalry when Grievous first met the infamous General Kenobi on the Malevolence. Grievous constantly wants to kill Kenobi face-to-face any chance he gets as he will even have traps set up for other Jedi just to face the sinister Kenobi himself.
The same move he used that killed Qui Gon. This was what Obi Wan wanted though. That's why he switched to Qui Gon's stance. He predicted that Maul would try the same move and when he did, Obi Wan was ready.
However, joining the Sith means declaring loyalty to the dark side, which Anakin did before his eyes turned yellow. This may explain why Kylo Ren, torn between the light and dark, didn't have yellow eyes in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, as killing his father split his spirit even more.
The most agreed upon theory, started by Reddit user Lumparoo in 2016, is that Jar-Jar is a powerful Force-user conspiring with Darth Sidious. In addition to this, some believe he either trained, or was supposed to become Supreme Leader Snoke, or that he is a reincarnation of Darth Plagueis.
History. A dark side warrior with a mysterious past, Kylo Ren was neither Jedi nor Sith, but a product of both sides' teachings. Once an apprentice of Luke Skywalker's, he killed his fellow students and drove Skywalker into exile, becoming a First Order warlord and servant of Supreme Leader Snoke.
