Pettigrew went into hiding as Scabbers the rat, hoping to avoid Lord Voldemort's other supporters. As Voldemort had met his downfall on Peter's instructions, the Death Eaters suspected him of being a traitor.

Why did Fred and George never mention Peter Pettigrew?
Some believe that Fred and George weren't aware of who Peter Pettigrew was, so they could've just seen his name and believed he was simply another Hogwarts student. However, as noted, there's a very good chance that Fred and George knew of his name and therefore should've recognized him.
As James and Lily's Secret-Keeper, Pettigrew was entrusted with the information of the Potters' hiding location in Godric's Hollow. He had not even been Secret-Keeper for a week when he handed the information over to Voldemort.
