In the spirit of honoring past tributes who had fallen in the Games, perhaps Madge simply wanted to honor her aunt's legacy, and she gifted the Mockingjay pin to Katniss as a kind of blessing on her, in the hopes that her fate would be different from that of her aunt's.
When Katniss first saw Madge wearing the pin, she thought that it could keep a family fed with bread for months, since it was made of finely crafted gold. When Madge came to bid Katniss farewell, she gave it to her as a symbol of District 12 and made her promise to wear it in the arena.
She becomes known as the "Mockingjay" as her conflict with Panem's autocratic leaders escalates into civil war. By the end of the saga, it's as much a part of her identity as her signature bow and arrows.

Page 38 Peeta's father visits Katniss and says, “I'll keep an eye on the little girl. Make sure she's eating.” has been lifted off her shoulder. But I was wondering why he was being nice to the person that is soon going to try and kill his son.
It makes a strong statement about the dangers of unrestricted power and how people are capable of forgetting their identities when placed in an extreme situation. “The Games” also warns about the effects of an inhumane society that fails to value life.
Why did Haymitch hit Peeta in the jaw on the train?
Katniss asks Haymitch for advice, and his response is, “Stay alive.” Then he laughs. Peeta responds aggressively, knocking the glass out of Haymitch's hand, and Haymitch responds by punching Peeta in the jaw.
Haymitch is already drinking, and Peeta gets angry with him because he's supposed to be advising them. He slaps the drink out of Haymitch's hand. Haymitch punches him, and Katniss stabs her knife into the table between his hand and the liquor bottle.
What does he mean by this? It means that during the arena, during his killing spree, he realizes that there's more to life than killing, and he's just a pawn in the whole scheme of things. He realizes that he's a cruel person the capitol created, and he wouldn't mind dying because he wasn't alive on the inside anyways.
Cato's moans are never-ending, and Katniss feels only pity for him and wants his suffering to stop. Morning finally comes and Katniss is able to see Cato below. Out of pity, she uses her last arrow to end Cato's life.
Though both were cruel toward the other tributes, they had formed an emotional connection with each other. However, in the film, Cato and Clove seemed to have no relationship with each other beyond that of allies.
On the other hand, while Gale also wants to create a better world, he tends to be more violent. Gale is resentful and believes the ends justify the means. While Gale's strength was necessary to win the war against the Capitol, Peeta's peaceful personality is ultimately what Katniss needed in a person.
The woods are now ruined. Katniss decides that the Capitol views her and Gale's weekly hunting trips — and the one time that Gale unexpectedly kissed her, which Snow knows about — as flaunting her defiance in front of the entire district.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
