He once ate an entire ox along with eight salmon and washed it all down with three barrels of mead (an alcoholic honey drink). Another myth tells of a drinking contest in which Thor attempted to drink the sea dry. He failed, but he lowered the level of the sea slightly, creating the first tides.
The King of the Giants later on admits to Thor that the end of the horn was in fact connected to the ocean and Thor had nearly succeeded in drinking it all. He took such huge gulps that, as the legend goes, the tides are Thor's valiant attempt to drink the ocean.

Why does Jormungandr hate Thor?
Jörmungandr harbors a strong hatred towards the Aesir gods, principally Thor and Odin, for massacring the giants to near extinction. He hates Thor the most (and vice-versa), and both are destined to slay each other during Ragnarök.
Could it be because Jörmungandr is actually an evil counterpart to Thor—one that he must kill at the end of Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse myth? This makes sense: unlike Thor and his family, who are all gods, Jörmungandr is an actual being created by Loki, one of the tricksters in Norse mythology.
Much later in the game, it's established that Thor has stopped drinking for the sake of his wife Sif and daughter Thrud.
