Towards the end of the novel It is revealed that Tony is actually Danny from the future, and is using the Shining to try and and physically warn his younger self about going to the Overlook Hotel.
Jack becomes obsessed enough with the hotel's sordid past that he wants to write a book about it. He makes a long-distance call to the hotel's manager, Stuart Ullmann, and antagonizes him with this knowledge. Eventually, he goes mad thanks to the influence of the hotel's ghosts and attempts to kill Wendy and Danny.
Daniel Anthony "Danny" Torrance, also known as Doctor Sleep, is a fictional character who first appears in the 1977 novel The Shining by Stephen King as a child with psychic powers called "the shining".
Surprisingly (given that he was so talented) Danny Lloyd, who played Danny Torrance in The Shining, was in just one other movie in his entire career (two years after The Shining, in 1982), and then quit acting completely saying that he had no interest in pursuing it as a career.
In the novel, Danny is the Overlook's primary victim, and Jack Torrance is simply used as a conduit to get to Danny. The hotel wants Danny dead so that it can absorb his “shining” ability to add to the Overlook's plethora of dark energies, so it possesses Jack in his vulnerable state to try to kill Danny.
Danny even manages to anticipate what is about to happen by writing “redrum” on the bathroom door because this is where the murder will take place. The separation of Danny's alter ego voices into manifestations of Tony and Jack, through the presence / absence of his wagging finger, fits very well throughout the film.
Like in the book, Danny is the son of Wendy and the main villain Jack Torrance. He has the ability to read minds. He was portrayed by Danny Lloyd in the 1980 film and by Courtland Mead in the mini TV series.

The combination of isolation, monotony, creative frustration, and supernatural forces extract Jack's insanity.

Danny wanders into room 217 and is attacked by a dead woman in a bathtub. Jack sleepwalks and destroys the CB radio, one of the family's only connections to the outside world. Wendy sees the marks on Danny's neck from the dead woman and accuses Jack of hurting Danny.
Simply put, this The Shining analysis posits that the film is just as much about the genocide of Native Americans as it is about ghosts haunting the hotel. The aforementioned Room 237 doc covers this theory and the following video digs even deeper into this Native American genocide interpretation.
In the film, Danny walks backwards in his own footprints to mislead Jack, then jumps to a side path and slips out of the maze. Wendy and Danny escape the hotel in Hallorann's Snowcat, while Jack gets lost trying to pick up Danny's tracks, sits down to rest, and freezes to death.
What mental illness does Jack have in The Shining?
The story presented Jack Torrance as a man who dislikes authority. He moved to an isolated hotel with his wife and his son in Colorado over the winter, hoping to improve and cure his poor writing. As the days passed, he began showing the symptoms of schizophrenia and attempted to kill his family.
He reminds Jack, and when Jack goes to check the boiler, Danny helps Wendy and Hallorann escape the hotel. Through the character of Danny and his ability to shine, King suggests that innate feelings, such as intuition and empathy, are valid and should be paid attention to.
Part of these efforts is what sees Danny Torrance earn the nickname of "Doctor Sleep." While working as an orderly at a hospice facility, Dan proves to have a knack for calming patients in their last minutes, thanks in part to his shining abilities.
By 2011, Dan has become an alcoholic to suppress his abilities. After moving to a New Hampshire town, Dan recovers through Alcoholics Anonymous. Working as a hospice orderly, Dan uses his shining to comfort dying patients, earning the nickname "Doctor Sleep".
We identified in previous chapters that Jack strangled Danny in the fatherly love scene and with these new details it would seem that he also sexually abused his son during this event.
One of the biggest giveaway's that Jack strangled Danny is a shot in which Jack walks down a mustard coloured hallway before switching on the lights of the Gold Room. In the previous scene he was accused by his wife of choking the boy and in this scene his reaction to the presence of mirrors confirms her accusation.
