We find that in the last moves, Ron, as a Knight, has manoeuvred himself to the edge of the board as a forced sacrifice to the White Queen, since he has checked the White King.
Those three pieces moved off the board and the trio stepped into the empty spots. The movie didn't have the horse part of the knight move off, so as Ron was acting as the knight, he had to climb onto the stone horse in order to play as the knight and direct things.
According to several sources, during the chess match near the end of the film, Rupert Grint is hit in the face with debris and his cheek is cut. Many behind the scenes featurettes used to promote the film show the production's reliance on practical effects. The chess scene is no different.
