More than 100 years from now, humans have traveled to a distant moon called Pandora, which is not unlike earth— forests, oceans, etc. —but also has air that becomes toxic for humans after about 10 seconds, which means humans have to wear oxygen masks to walk around.
Pandora's air is unbreathable due to high levels of carbon dioxide and trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide, posing a threat to humans. Humans use exopacks and avatar bodies to survive and explore Pandora's toxic atmosphere, but these solutions have limitations and challenges.
Pandora's atmosphere is a mix of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, xenon, methane, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, the latter three of which are unbreathable for humans, who wear Exo-Packs when outside their buildings or vehicles.
They briefly touch on this in the movie but I wish they elaborated a bit more on it. Humans can last 10 seconds breathing na'vi air, but na'vi can breathe human air for much longer than that but they still at some point need a mask to help them breathe regular human air.

As of the end of the original movie, Jake has permanently left his human body behind, via a ritual that transplanted his consciousness fully into his Avatar body, so if he is killed, he's gone for good.

But it turns out the 'hair sex' scene was never part of the theatrical cut at all, it was actually in the Avatar extended version that was released in 2010. The extended version is also included on home video, DVD and Blu-ray.
