California has a lot of famous landmarks and beautiful landscapes, making it a great location to film movies in and it is known worldwide for its spectacular Pacific coastal highway, its majestic Redwood forests, national parks, snow-capped mountains, rivers, lakes and different desert looks.
In the early 1900s, most motion picture camera and equipment patents were held by Thomas Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company in New Jersey, which often sued filmmakers to stop their productions. To escape this, filmmakers began moving to Los Angeles, where attempts to enforce Edison's patents were easier to evade.
Because they were so far away from Edison, it was easier for innovators to operate in Hollywood. In addition, the weather in California was excellent for film-making, so the industry grew there and remains there today.
They were created there by the numerous filmmakers who moved their business from New York in search of a more consistent climate for round-the-year film shooting and, of course, to escape fees imposed by Tomas Edison, who owned many patents on the movie-making process.
For the second year in a row, California is the top state in the nation for film production. But the share of movies being shot in the Golden State fell from 21 percent in 2014 to 17 percent last year, a new study found.

Far and away the most popular location in the world for filming movies and television shows, Los Angeles has been the cultural center for the film industry since the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s.
But despite America's diverse 'cast' of locations, California and New York continue to dominate the U.S. cinematic landscape. While California remains best known for its studio productions, you'd probably guess that New York's most filmed location is Central Park — and as our new study proves, you'd be right.
"There were a number of reasons the movie business moved to Southern California," said Charles Musser, a professor of film history at Yale. "Weather was certainly one of them. They didn't have the terrible winter weather of the East. There was no rain and it was much warmer so you could work outside all year."
Silicon Valley is the main thing for Tech but their are other successful tech cities also while Film is pretty much only L.A and NY. Southern California also offers sunlight and a warm climate virtually year-round, which was (and is) very desirable for shooting outdoors. That attracted what would become studios.
Movie and film studios are starting to move to New Mexico, or the so-called "tamalewood," in order to take advantage of its 35% tax incentive for the entertainment industry. Major production companies like Netflix and NBCUniversal have both built studios in Albuquerque within the last year.

The Thirty Mile Zone is a thirty-mile radius from the center of Los Angeles. Outside of this particular zone, producers must pay transportation costs to cast and crew. However, the earliest version of the 30-mile zone map wasn't actually a 30-mile zone at all.
Central Park in New York City is the world's most-filmed location. Spread out over 840 acres, the park is a big green oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle. If you look at a map of Upper Manhattan, you'd see Central Park taking up the whole center, between the city's Upper West Side and Upper East Side.
It really comes down to what type of filmmaker you think you are, and what kind of filmmaker you want to be. Just because these two cities lend themselves to these mentalities doesn't mean you can't be a indie type guy in LA or a big budget blockbuster type guy in NY.
There are plenty of other major cities with film industry, your company could thrive anywhere. The idea that film production can only happen in LA or NYC is really a myth. There are plenty of successful production companies in most major cities.
