The film attempts to illustrate Chappie as a child trying to find his way in the world and gain some sense of morality. Unfortunately, the film falls short in this goal. Most of Chappie's problems stem from its terrible pacing, making it impossible for it to tell the story it wants to tell in its time constraint.
So much of Chappie is just plain off-putting, and not in compelling or interesting ways. Chappie the Robot is like a walking, talking version of Jodie Foster's accent in Elysium – a choice so inexplicable that it's a surprise that at no point did the film's crew stage a creative intervention.
"Chappie," by comparison, is an exhausting slog through overly familiar cliches that is nowhere near as profound or touching as it clearly thinks it is and is utterly lacking in the kind of intelligence and artistry that it so often pays lip service to in the dialogue.
Parents need to know that Chappie is from South African director/sci-fi specialist Neill Blomkamp, who also made District 9. Despite the movie's Short Circuit-meets-A.I. overtones, Chappie is far too violent to be appropriate for tweens or even young teens.
Definitely worth a rent at least. Chappie is a Artificial Intelligence with human knowledge that soon discovers that the real world is not a great place and as soon as he realizes that the society is trying to terminate him he must fight in order to survive.

He devises a program to instill consciousness in his robots, and when his bottom line-fixated boss, Michelle Bradley (Sigourney Weaver), forbids him from installing the software, he secretly programs a damaged, child-like droid. Chappie is more about the unjust rule of law in the household than on the streets.
It isn't the worst failure in Hollywood history as it did at least make back its budget. But after marketing fees and other costs, it is unlikely the movie made a profit. More than that, it caused Blomkamp to self-reflect as his role as an artist.
The film is rated R (Restricted Audiences) by the MPAA and L (Limited Adult Audiences) by the USCCB. As one can deduce from the USCCB's rating, this movie isn't for everyone.
It's this time-old message of humanity, adapted to fit with today's technologies, that transcends the overpowering, at times clunky, cinematic vessel. Content collapsed. Its oddly jumbled machinery never clicks. The logic of Chappie gradually disintegrates, becoming increasingly farcical.
