In David's early life, Aquaman killed Black Manta's father Jesse Hyde by accident in retaliation for attacking Aquaman's father Thomas Curry at the time when Stephen Shin contracted David to obtain the DNA of Aquaman who later mistook Jesse for David when exacting vengeance.

In the alternate timeline of the 2011 "Flashpoint" storyline, Mera is the Queen of Atlantis and killed by the Amazons at some point. Her death prompted Aquaman to cause Western Europe to sink into the sea, hoping to destroy New Themyscira as well.
The culprit of the murders, thefts and the framing of the Amazons is revealed to be the witch Circe, who "kills" Diana by reverting her form back into the clay she was born from. Later, Wonder Woman is brought back to life and together with Donna Troy, battles Circe and ultimately defeats her.

According to director James Wan, the sequel was never meant to focus on Mera and Aquaman the way the first movie did. He told Entertainment Weekly before the sequel opened in theaters that “Aquaman 2” always prioritized Aquaman's relationship to his villainous half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), over his one to Mera.
There was a time when the DCEU could kill off a child character, nodding to 1978's Aquaman #60 (from David Michelinie, Don Newton, John Celardo, Milton Snapinn and Jerry Serpe). There, Black Manta used technology to attack the palace and suffocate the Arthur's son, causing his death.
In a show of heroics, Aquaman offers to save Black Manta. He kneels next to the crevice, offering the villain his hand. However, Manta lets go and falls to his death beneath the crumbling ruin of Necrus.
In the end, the heroes are successful, Black Manta dies and Aquaman reveals the existence of Atlantis to the United Nations, hoping the underwater civilization can be recognized as a sovereign nation.
