Katniss saw Buttercup as another mouth to feed, so she tried to drown him in a bucket of water before Prim begged for his life. After that, Buttercup tended to hiss at her, though he stopped when she started to give him entrails from the game she hunted. Still, Katniss thought he was the ugliest cat in the world.
Buttercup hates Katniss because Katniss only sees him as another mouth to feed and not a loving family member. Katniss also tried to drown Buttercup in a river.
In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.

Prim was the most important person to Katniss throughout the whole series, so much so that she sacraficed herself for her. She was Katniss's connection to compassion and empathy. Killing her was showing that even after everything, Katniss couldn't have everything she wanted.
Prim was among the medics who arrived to treat the victims. Unfortunately, a second batch of bombs were set off, with Prim being killed in the explosions. Gale was not the one to drop the bombs from the hovercraft, but he was one of the key figures to devise the strategy of double bombings.

In Chapter 9, as Caesar Flickerman interviews Peeta before the Games, Peeta reveals to Caesar and all of Panem that he's in love with Katniss. Peeta's revelation sets in motion the storyline of him and Katniss as ill-fated lovers that carries on throughout the Games.
