Marvin's design was based on the Hoplite style of armor usually worn by the Roman god Mars. "That was the uniform that Mars wore — that helmet and skirt. We thought putting it on this ant-like creature might be funny. But since he had no mouth, we had to convey that he was speaking totally through his movements.
Because he is a Martian, I decided that Marvin should be dressed as a Martian. My first step in creating the character was therefore to draw the curiously tufted helmet worn by Mars, the Roman God of War, although Marvin could take his version of the helmet off and shine his tennis shoes with it.

Indeed, the true horror of Marvin's existence is that no task he could be given would occupy even the tiniest fraction of his vast intellect. Marvin claims he is 50,000 times more intelligent than a human (or 30 billion times more intelligent than a live mattress), though this is, if anything, an underestimation.
This is the first cartoon where the character is called "Gossamer", and is so named by Marvin the Martian. Jones gave the monster this name "because he's the opposite looking of gossamer. He's a big, hairy thing." In the 1995 short film, Carrotblanca, Gossamer is seated at a table.
Martians are a very long-lived species. Marvin once claimed that he has been trying to destroy Earth for more than two millennia. The fact that he is still alive and well in the 24½th Century also supports this claim.

Lola Bunny is a Looney Tunes cartoon character portrayed as an anthropomorphic female bunny created by Warner Bros. Pictures. She is generally depicted as Bugs Bunny's girlfriend. She first appeared in the 1996 film Space Jam.

Why does Marvin the Martian have a broom on his head?
The curved crest of his helmet appears, with the push-broom-like upper section, to comically resemble an ancient Greek hoplite's or a Roman centurion's helmet. The appearance of the combination of Marvin's head and helmet allegedly led to Bugs Bunny thinking he was a "bowling ball wearing a spittoon" in one short.
Queen Tyr'ahnee is a female counterpart of Marvin the Martian who wears outfits reminiscent of ancient Egyptian royal garbs as well as Martian princesses found within Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series.
