Why is Katniss surprised when Prim is chosen as a tribute?
On Page 20, Primrose Everdeen was picked as the girl tribute for District 12. Her sister, Katniss is devastated and confused because it was her first year and her name was only entered once. Katniss knows at only age 12, her sister has no chance to survive, so Katniss volunteers as a tribute for her sister.
Everdeen, passed away, she has been forced to be the primary caregiver to her sister, Prim, and her mother, Mrs. Everdeen. Prim being reaped as the Tribute for The 74th Annual Hunger Games makes Katniss feel like she has failed in protecting her and everything she has worked for to be all for naught.

Prim's cat is named Buttercup. He is a ragged-looking yellow cat with a surly disposition, except when it comes to Prim. Buttercup adores Prim because she rescued him and nursed him back to health. Through Prim's connection with Buttercup, Collins establishes the young girl's caring nature early in the novel.
