The real villain of Frankenstein is not the creature despite his appearance and evil deeds. The real monster and antagonist of the novel is Victor, his creator. He first gives life to the beast pretending himself to be a God. Then, he abandons him, neither killing him nor teaching him the correct life principles.
By contrasting Victor's own “idyllic” childhood with the rejection of the creation, Shelley conveys that Victor is somewhat culpable for the “fiendish” behavior of the Creation. Ultimately, it is Victor's vaulting and “unrestricted” ambition that renders him the monster of the novel.

Given these potential consequences, Victor decides he would be selfish to provide the creature a mate to save himself from the creature's persecutions, so he destroys the female. It is a decision based on projected outcomes, but it misses the extent of the ethical problem.

Frankenstein also betrays the monster by breaking his promise to create a mate for him. The monster comes to realize that no one will ever look past his exterior to see who he is underneath. As a result, he uses violence to make Victor Frankenstein share the pain he is feeling.
As the story progresses, Victor's initial emotional reactions to seeing the creature come to life—disgust and horror—are substantiated by the creature's actions. Victor learns that the creature has killed his young brother William, whose death is then blamed on a family friend, Justine.
