In Marvel Comics, Murdock fashioned his prototype Daredevil suit out of the boxing materials of his father, Jack, turning his trunks, boots, and robe into his superhero outfit. The Marvel vigilante's yellow costume served as a fitting tribute to his father, honoring the man that he looked up to growing up.
Daredevil's Yellow Costume Came from His Father's Boxing Gear, but It was a Retcon. In Daredevil #1, published in April 1964, Bill Everett designed the costume using mostly yellow instead of the expected "devil" red. The red parts of the costume most often appeared black in the comic itself.
Resembling Daredevil's very first costume in the original comics, the new suit was predominantly yellow with red being a secondary color. This was opposed to more well-known all red costume he wore in his Netflix show and most frequently on the page.
What color was Daredevil's first costume? His first ”prototype” suit was all black. But his actual first “Real” suit was black and yellow (the black was highlighted in red in the comics).
By 2025, Matt Murdock hired superhero outfit designer Luke Jacobson in Los Angeles to create a couple of Daredevil suits for him, with new billy clubs. One of the suits was nearly identical to his previous suit, albeit with a golden yellow as the new primary color.
This yellow and red color scheme is actually the first suit Matt ever wore in the comics. This symbolically shows that this is Daredevil's return to form for the MCU.
When Daredevil began, he did not wear red; he wore yellow, black, and red. It is his period in that costume – the first seven issues of his comic — that is covered in this story.
He kept the red in the suit as an accent and made the eyes red to give him a more fearful look. The new costume was meant to move Daredevil from neighborhood hero up to the big leagues.
3 Crime Scene Forensics. Daredevil's heightened senses allow him to examine his surroundings. At a crime scene, he can smell chemicals in the air, the copper of spent bullet casings, or the metal in blood that was spilled.
The costume's overall design, the helmet's look, and more are directly pulled from Daredevil and what Charlie Cox wore before. Audiences will notice that the suit is now red and yellow instead of red and black. The color switch is a callback to the comics where Daredevil wears a black and yellow costume for some time.
The suit provided Daredevil with enhanced protection, however the original prototype was incomplete and not properly refined. The red areas on the suit could only protect against knives depending on the angle, while the black parts which were bullet resistant and would offer significantly more protection.
In Daredevil #1 (by Bill Everett, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko), we see that Matt Murdock (who, by the way, we should note obviously lost his sight when he was old enough to know what colors were, so he can at least know what red looks like when someone says "red" to him) actually CAN feel different colors!
His thoughts further explain that he can hear heartbeats, recognize anyone by smelling their perfumes and odors, taste how many grains of salt are in food, and feel how many bullets there are in a revolver due to its weight. In a few panels, Lee even reveals Matt can distinguish colors apart purely by touch.
The main character, Matt Murdock (Daredevil), became blind after an incident involving a chemical spill when he was a child. The accident gave him superhuman senses and the ability to navigate the world in a different way.
In She-Hulk Episode 8, "Ribbit and Rip It" -- penned by none other than Marvel Comics writer Cody Ziglar (Spider-Punk) -- Jen first encounters fellow lawyer Matt (also known as the vigilante Daredevil) in the courtroom. The two then meet up at a bar and eventually head back to Jen's place, where they sleep together.
In the span of just one episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, audiences were quick to fall in love with the lawyer lovers. This is especially interesting because, before the MCU brought them together, Jen and Matt were never a romance in the comics, save for a brief flash in the House of M universe.
While the recent She-Hulk TV show created a romantic link between Jen Walters and Matt Murdock - aka the vigilante Daredevil - it's unlikely MCU fans will ever see their relationship take the same dark twist as in the comics.
When Daredevil's identity is outed to the press by an assistant of Ben Urich, Murdock fakes his death. Karen and Foggy later find Matt still alive, in a state of stupor, in his yellow Daredevil uniform but without the mask. Foggy finally realizes Matt's secret identity. They reconcile and become law partners again.
