He is a blue alien with a genius-level intellect and a desire for affection stemming from his dark past involving his heroic rival, Metro Man, making him become the villain that he is. Not long after, Megamind becomes consumed with depression because now that he finally destroyed his nemesis he feels he no longer has a purpose and he goes to the Metro Man museum to destroy the memory of Metro Man in an attempt to move on.
There are other fan theories connected to this subject, of course—it's been suggested that Megamind may have an anxiety disorder, could be high-functioning autistic, and is likely going through a midlife crisis during the film—but I will leave it there for this week.
