“There's no question that M3GAN would definitely win. She's much smarter than Chucky,” says Jason Blum, the powerhouse horror producer behind M3GAN and many other Blumhouse Productions. The film doesn't seem to specify any external influences which led to M3GAN becoming a violent murder doll — instead, it all seems to be a result of her nature as a learning machine with a core directive: Keep Cady safe, no matter what the cost. In M3GAN's eyes, she's just doing what she was programmed to do.
M3GAN is an acronym for Model 3 Generative ANdroid. While this name might sound rubbish at first glance, it tells us how the doll works. First of all, M3GAN is an android. That means she has a metallic robot body covered with elements that makes her look more human.
Interestingly, the age rating given in the US – where the film opened on Friday 6th January – is PG-13, with the film having undergone some reshoots in post-production to take it down from the more extreme R rating. M3GAN is showing in UK cinemas from Friday 13th January 2023.
M3gan is definitely fun, but it succumbs to tropes and familiarity in a way that makes it feel reductive. With strong performances from Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, 'M3GAN' fully embraces the campiness.
Played by 12-year-old dancer Amie Donald, M3GAN is a sophisticated creation in every sense – a state-of-the-art robot the size of a real tween girl, with big glassy eyes, pouty lips, and wavy strawberry-blonde hair.
Which is why M3GAN director Gerard Johnstone crafted M3GAN the robot through a mix of VFX, a life-sized physical prop, the voice of Jenna Davis and the physical movement of child actor, Amie Donald. The result is spine-chilling, and often hilarious.

But what the iconic “Child's Play” menace has never been subjected to is an intense interrogation around his own personal tastes in horror. Turns out he harbors a deep fear of “Grey's Anatomy”-turned-rom-com addict Katherine Heigl, among other things.
Tiffany Valentine, portrayed by horror icon Jennifer Tilly, made her first on-screen appearance in 1998's Bride of Chucky. Canonically speaking, though, she was actually the girlfriend of Charles Lee Ray before he became a killer doll.
M3GAN loves to sing and dance while she kills, but her frivolity only makes her victims underestimate her. M3GAN is a cybernetic automaton that could rip Chucky apart by popping his head off or removing his limbs one by one. If she can do it to a human, she can do it to a doll made of plastic and basic electronics.
With that said, there are still some horror fans who would've preferred to see M3GAN in all of its R-rated glory before the cuts trimmed it down to a PG-13 rating. Akela Cooper, who co-wrote the script based on a story co-written with Wan, also falls into this category.
For those of you worried “M3GAN,” is not scary, it has the typical jump scares, but the only truly creepy thing about this film is the execution of M3GAN herself. Seemingly done 100% practically, the creepy doll is a mix of live acting and a robotic puppet mask.
Director Ben Wheatley says his new shark movie is more about “summer thrills” than “gory thrills”. But consider The Meg 2's 12A rating due warning. Legs will kick.
