Many people disparage Peeta because Katniss needs to save him multiple times, especially during the first Hunger Games movie. But what some people fail to acknowledge is the fact that Katniss likely wouldn't have survived the Games without Peeta's help.
Why does Katniss say that she wouldn t have survived without Peeta?
While Katniss is in the process of retrieving the bow and arrows, Cato sees her, but Peeta holds him off so that she can escape. Katniss may have great survival skills, but Cato is bigger and stronger than her, so if Peeta wasn't there to hold him off, Cato might have killed Katniss then and there.

Even though both Gale and Peeta are great men who wanted the best for Katniss, there's no doubt Peeta was kinder, and more loyal and understanding. As Katniss readies herself to take the stage, she realizes that, although she has made it out of the arena, the most dangerous part of the Hunger Games has begun.
But Katniss also considers that Peeta shook his head at her at the Cornucopia, which may have been him watching out for her welfare, and that he didn't tell the Careers about her skill with a bow, preserving her advantage should she find one.
Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.
When Katniss comes home to District 12, Gale immediately confesses his love for Katniss, and she realizes she might have feelings for him, too — but she can't explore them, because she has to continue her fake relationship with Peeta or else her entire family, including “cousin Gale,” will be killed.
Gale is jealous of Peeta, even in his altered state, and Katniss has always been conflicted when kissing Peeta because of Gale. They have faced the truth together, and Katniss feels she and Peeta may never be together again, so in a vulnerable moment, she kisses Gale.
He has betrayed her and is betraying all of District 12 by buddying up with the Careers, whom she calls the "Capitol's lapdogs." She decides that if the Careers don't kill him, she'd be more than happy to. Then, she wonders why Peeta hasn't told them about her bow and arrow skills yet.
