Halle's Little Mermaid hairstylist, Camille Friend, made sure to keep Halle's natural locs (per her request) for the role of Ariel. She ended up wrapping red hair around her over 24-inch natural locs. The hair wrapping took over 12 hours and was completed multiple times during filming.
Halle went on to say that she wanted to keep Ariel's red hair because that's an integral part of her character, but that she admired the fact that she is a Black woman with locs and wanted to bring that part of herself to Ariel's look.
Obviously, modifications are required anytime you adapt animation to live-action, but Bailey and the beauty department had to reimagine Ariel as a woman of color too. Bailey and the team opted to keep her hair red—that was essential—but opted for copper locs to make it her own.
Locs are cultivated, but dreadlocks aren't. Dreadlocks also often stem from Rastafarian beliefs, which use the style to separate believers from the rest of society. As for physical differences, locs have a well-kept and tidier look to them compared to dreadlocks, which have a more natural appearance.

Are dreadlocks real or fake hair?

Friend added loose hair in with Bailey's locs to create even more fluidity and give her that mermaid-like look. "Once we doubled [the loose hair] and we put her in the water and all that hair was dancing, we were there." CGI, visual effects, and the hair department worked hand in hand throughout the entire film.

Bailey, who sports long locs, wanted to stay true to her Black heritage. And maintaining them without a wig would herald an important moment for representation and Bailey's identity, as the movie presents Disney's first Black Ariel (and first Black princess in a live-action movie.)
