Granted, Hope (Lilly) isn't referred to as Cassie's (Kathryn Newton) stepmom, and Hope and Scott (Paul Rudd) aren't officially married, as far as we know.
Hope is hostile to him because her father has refused to allow her to take the risk and pull the heist, and she resents Scott for taking her place. However, she still assumes a mentor role to him, and by the end of the film, it's revealed they are having an affair, though how far that affair goes is not entirely clear.
Scott is originally described as a thief in Ant-Man, but it is later revealed by his friend Luis that Scott used to work for a company named VistaCorp, which was overcharging its customers in an intentional scheme. Instead of standing by while this terrible falsehood continued, he chose to act.
