Anguirus was Godzilla's first-ever opponent, and battled him to the death in Osaka in Godzilla Raids Again. Anguirus was ultimately killed by Godzilla, but a second individual debuted in the film Destroy All Monsters in 1968.
In the prologue for the film Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, the corpses of Anguirus and Rodan make a cameo appearance, having been killed by a bio-weapon created by the Chinese military.

There, the two monsters again engaged in a vicious struggle, destroying Osaka Castle in the process. In the end, Godzilla mortally wounded Anguirus with a vicious bite to the neck, then finally killed him by setting him aflame with his atomic breath.
TriStar originally planned to produce a trilogy, and Tab Murphy was commissioned by Emmerich and Devlin to write a story treatment for Godzilla 2. However, the sequels were cancelled due to the 1998 film's poor reception and TriStar let their remake/sequel rights expire on May 20, 2003.
