Fans will be pleased to know that this is not the case. Bilbo did in fact make it as far as the Lonely Mountain, back to visit his friends who still live in Erebor after their quest to reclaim their homeland 60 years earlier was successful and they managed to rid the golden halls of Smaug the dragon.
Did Bilbo ever get to see the Lonely Mountain again?
After his departure, Bilbo wandered to Rivendell and then, after a rest, accompanied some Dwarves to Dale and the Lonely Mountain, before returning to Rivendell.
Repopulated with Dwarvish colonists from each of the seven Dwarf kingdoms, Erebor was soon restored to its former glory and flourished once more, as did its neighbor-city Dale. In time, Erebor retook its place as the most powerful Dwarf kingdom in Middle-earth.
In The Lord of the Rings, the mountain is called by the Sindarin name Erebor. The Lonely Mountain is the destination of the protagonists, including the titular Hobbit Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, and is the scene of the novel's climax.
They all united against the common enemy, and so was fought the Battle of Five Armies in the valley of Dale. Thorin was killed in the battle, as were his sister-sons Kíli and Fíli. As his "rightful heir," Dáin succeeded Thorin as King under the Mountain, and King of all of Durin's folk.
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.
Though Gimli has no children, he is not the last Dwarf of Middle-earth. After the fall of Sauron, his people continued to thrive in the Lonely Mountain. Gimli made his home in Rohan, in the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and many of his kinsfolk came with him.
From TA 2989 to TA 2994, the re-colonization of Moria was an attempted expedition led by Balin to re-take the ancient Dwarven Kingdom of Khazad-dûm. An initial effort was successful in reclaiming some of Moria from the Orcs.

Who takes over the Lonely Mountain after Thorin dies?
After the death of Thorin in the Battle of Five Armies, Dain becomes King under the Mountain. He redeems the Arkenstone from Bard with a fourteenth of the treasure, which is used to re-establish Dale. Over the next three years, Bard rebuilds the city of Dale and becomes its ruler. The city begins to prosper again.

The last we see or hear of Tauriel is her mourning Kíli, confessing her love, and kissing his lips. What happens next? No one knows. Peter Jackson never says, but Evangeline Lilly - the actress who played Tauriel - said in an interview that she thinks Tauriel returned to Mirkwood even though she was banished.
