Tolkien at first had Gandalf and his opponent (then a Nazgûl) fall from a very low height so that both were able to survive this. Later, when he decided that the opponent was a Balrog and that both the demon and Gandalf were ancient spirits older than the universe itself he also changed the depth of the chasm.

But he realizes the Quest is in peril and so sacrifices himself to ensure their escape; he falls from the bridge and fights the Balrog, but is himself killed. Yet he returns and is enhanced in power and clothed in white.
In the closing moments, the Istar told Nori, "Always follow your nose.” That was a clear reference to The Fellowship of the Ring, and unless all wizards have a thing for noses, it's a pretty clear confirmation that Meteor Man is Gandalf after all.
