Gatsby got rich as a bootlegger by selling alcohol to drug stores after Congress passed the Volstead Act, declaring most alcohol illegal to possess or consume. The Volstead Act went into effect in 1920, so Gatsby most likely had his distribution system set up within a year or two.
It is widely held that Jay Gatsby's love for Daisy was so consuming that he earned a fortune in order to win her back after she married uber-wealthy Tom Buchanan.
Because Gatsby has no heirs, and it seems unlikely that he would have bequeathed his fortune to either his business associates or Daisy, readers can probably assume that his father would get his fortune, as he is the only living relative that is revealed in the text.

Feeling that Gatsby would not want to go through a funeral alone, Nick tries to hold a large funeral for him, but all of Gatsby's former friends and acquaintances either have disappeared—Tom and Daisy, for instance, move away with no forwarding address—or refuse to come, like Meyer Wolfsheim and Klipspringer.

Gatsby has two purposes in mind when he calls Nick 'old sport'. First, he is attempting to manufacture the sense of closeness with Nick. Everything that Gatsby does is for Daisy, including his befriending of Nick.
She betrays him by being her cowardly self. She tried once to stand up for her love of him when they first met, but her life is more complicated now with an aggressive, domineering husband and a child. She doesn't have any support -other than Nick, her distant cousin, to help her do the right thing.
To Gatsby, Daisy represents the paragon of perfection—she has the aura of charm, wealth, sophistication, grace, and aristocracy that he longed for as a child in North Dakota and that first attracted him to her.
