They encouraged him to stop kidnapping princesses and try to hang out instead. After much effort, Ice King made progress. He began to see the value in friendship over forced companionship. He started spending more time with Finn and Jake.
Ice King in turn gradually became less evil as those around him became understanding of his struggles. His relationship with Princess Bubblegum also becomes less antagonistic, despite his repeated attempts to kidnap her in the beginning of the series.

Ice King's desire for “princesses” stems from half-remembered echoes of Simon's old girlfriend, Betty. Even his insanity was a conscious decision, a sacrifice he made after putting on the crown to save a young Marceline.

Voiced originally by Lena Dunham and later by Felicia Day, Betty was Simon's fiancée 1,000 years before the events of the show. After he found a magic crown and lost his mind, she left him, and they never saw each other again.
Origin. Sometime before the Mushroom War, Ice King was a normal, olive-skinned, dark-haired, glasses-wearing human named Simon Petrikov studying to be an antiquarian (a specialist in the knowledge of ancient artifacts).

Betty had uploaded an A.I. of herself to fix the crown, that would in addition "fix" Simon. She was cured of her madness after Simon reminded of the memories he had of her. Ice King's mind, however, still remains senile after the crown is stabilized.
