After more hiking, the boys locate the body. The discovery traumatizes Gordie, who asks Chris why Denny had to die and cries about his father hating him.
Eventually, they come back to the tracks and discover Ray's body (Kent W. Luttrell), knocked clean out of his shoes and lying in some bushes. They decide to build a stretcher for him and Gordie breaks down, crying that his father truly hates him and knowing that he favored Denny.
Gordie later remarks that utlimately neither gang claimed the body. One of their members placed an anonymous call to the local police, who claimed the earthly remains. The corpse was presumably handed over to the Brower family and prepared for proper burial by an undertaker.

How did the four boys know where where the body was located? While Vern was under the porch looking for a misplaced jar of pennies, he overheard his older brother Billy (Casey Siemaszko) and Billy's friend Charlie Hogan (Gary Riley) talking about how they found the body after dumping a stolen car.

Is Stand by Me Based on a true story?
According to director Rob Reiner (via FSR), King's response to the film was "[Y]ou've really captured my story. It is autobiographical. All that was made up was the device of the hunt for the body." In King's own words then, Stand by Me is based on his own life.
Ray Brower, a boy from a nearby town, has disappeared, and twelve-year-old Gordie Lachance and his three friends set out on a quest to find his body along the railroad tracks.
Gordie needs to look him in the face to prove to himself that it was not he who died. Ray's body helps him digest the experience of death and dying, something he was unable to do when his brother died. His maturity is achieved through the confrontation with, and understanding of mortality (Evan 2005).

The kid was dead." Ray Brower, although not an important character to the story, holds a placemarker for the mystery that is death. For Gordon, this is his chance to come to terms with his brother's death, and for the other boys, it's a way to prove themselves to the town.
Gordie's obsession with finding the body represents his attempt to come to terms with the knowledge that death can always be lurking around the corner. Back to Stand by Me: As the quartet get closer to the body, the boys grow more somber.

Chris literally giving Gordie a shoulder to cry on, when he breaks down in tears after seeing Ray Brower's body (which reminds him of his deceased older brother Denny), saying that his dad "hates him."
Teddy Duchamp is described by Gordie as "the craziest guy we hung around with. He didn't have much of a chance in life. His dad was given to fits of rage. One time he held Teddy's ear to a stove and almost burned it off." His father has PTSD and often takes it out on Teddy.
When Candy is sentenced to rehab for income tax evasion, she decides to call her meek but ambitious former stand-in Paula (also played by Barrymore) to take her place. Paula agrees on condition that Candy return to acting so she can get her stand-in job again.
Although only Chris is mentioned to have died in the film, Teddy and Vern's deaths are also given in the novella. Vern dies in a fire during a house party and Teddy dies in a drunk driving accident. Vern and Teddy are spared in the film: Vern marries out of high school, has four kids, and works as a forklift operator.
In the book it is said that Gordie loves Chris, however it is never specified as to what love Gordie is referring to (romantic or platonic). The two are extremely touchy with each other and overall act like boyfriends. They're always there for each other when no one else is.
What does Gordie find himself unable to say to Chris?
He can not tell Chris what their experience together has meant—they stood by each other (the only ones who did, Vern and Teddy ran away)—he can not tell Chris what Chris's friendship means to him; he can not tell Chris that he loves him. Have things changed for Gordie at home?
Teddy's dad had stormed the beach at Normandy, and that's just the way Teddy always put it. Teddy was proud of his old man in spite of what his old man had done to him, and Teddy went with his mom to visit him every week. He was the dumbest guy we hung around with, I guess, and he was crazy.
How did Gordon feel about Dennis' death? He felt mildly shocked and mildly sad. He felt he didn't know Dennis that well because of their age difference.
Some time before the story begins, Teddy's father had become enraged with Teddy for a minor accident and had held both of Teddy's ears to their hot stove, causing Teddy severe deafness.
As the boys are crossing the train trestle (Chris and Teddy have already crossed, but Gordie and Vern are only halfway through), Gordie has a psychic flash that tells him to feel one of the rails of the train tracks (if it is humming, it means a train is coming).
