Loki died telling Thanos he would never be a god. As the Mad Titan blows up the Statesman with half of the remaining Asgardians and dead Loki, Thor, the only remaining survivor on the ship, believes there will be no more resurrections for his brother and mourns his loss deeply.
This caused Thor to send lightning towards them, toppling the mine on top of them. Loki apologized and confessed, saying he only thought of the challenge to get the Cup and gain as much respect as Thor. His brother forgave him and found a way out of the mine.
Thor loves Loki and wished for him to return home so they could be a family again. However, he has become increasingly agitated with Loki, losing hope that he could be redeemed after he continues to try and subjugate innocent people.

Why did Thor think Loki was dead?
During Thor: The Dark World, Loki deceives Thor, faking his death after Kurse impails him. As Thor cradles his brother, Loki chokes out his "final" words before dying. However, Odin sends a guard to Svartalfheim, and a living Loki swaps places with him, returning to Asgard to dethrone the Allfather.
Thanos destroys everyone and everything on the ship. He takes the Tesseract (which has an Infinity Stone inside) from Loki and then chokes the god of mischief until he dies.

Now Odin did tell Thor he was stronger then him (Odin) which some interpret as Odin meaning Thor is stronger than Odin cause Thor now has his fathers power plus his own. But we have to remember two things. Odin himself said Mjølnir only channeled Thor's power, Thor just needed to learn to use it naturally.
An in-universe reason, however, could be the link between Thor and Earth, as Odin banished his son to Earth in Thor, in hopes that he would overcome his ego and arrogance and learn a powerful lesson on humility and what being a hero is truly about.

The real answer is even more impressive than how Loki survived in the first Thor movie. Loki's Thor: The Dark World death was of course, also fake, and it allowed Loki to ambush the Asgardian who found his body and disguise himself as the messenger, thus earning the opportunity to slip into Odin's presence.
The chaos the deities face, such as the destabilization of the world-tree and Fenrir's escape, leads to Loki freeing himself. During the battle, Loki eventually begins to fight Heimdall, who guards the entrance to Asgard. The two ultimately engage in a battle to the death, killing each other during the conflict.
