Ask the animators at Weta, and they'll tell you that the avatars and Na'vi are animated. Ask Jim Cameron, and he'll say the characters were performed by the actors. The truth is that both are right. It took great animation skill to ensure that the characters performed exactly as the actors did.
For the original “Avatar,” the writer-director James Cameron made extensive use of cutting-edge performance capture technology. It enabled his human cast to portray the 10-foot-tall, pointy-eared, blue-skinned aliens called the Na'vi, the inhabitants of a jungle moon named Pandora.
The Netflix show, based on the original Nickelodeon cartoon, features an all-new cast led by Gordon Cormier, who takes on the role of Aang, the young airbender who comes to discover he's the Avatar – the one person capable of mastering all four elements.

Are the humans in Avatar CGI?
Avatar utilizes 60% CGI imagery, with a majority of the CG character animation filmed with revolutionary new motion-capture techniques using live actors. The other 40% of the film utilizes the traditional techniques of live-action imagery. James Cameron began to work on Avatar since the early 1990s.
To provide the appearance of a paraplegic's atrophied legs, director James Cameron commissioned the production of prosthetic legs for Worthington, and post-production, digitally edited out any trace of the actor's actual legs.

The film's visual effects team used a combination of computer-generated imagery (CGI) and practical effects to create the film's stunning world. The CGI was used to create the film's digital characters and environments, while the practical effects were used to create the physical sets and props.
In Avatar, the Na'vi are an indigenous species that live on Pandora. They are humanoid in appearance and are 9 to 10 feet (2.7 to 3.0 m) tall, having pairs of eyes, ears, arms, legs and feet like humans, as well as a nose, a mouth, and expressions recognizable to humans.

Neteyam te Suli Tsyeyk'itan, or Neteyam, is a major character in the Avatar franchise, serving as one of the main characters in Avatar: The Way of Water. He is the 15-year-old eldest son of Jake Sully and Neytiri, who is also the older brother of Lo'ak, Tuktirey, and Kiri.
In Cameron's script she's introduced with the descriptor "in human age she would be 18," but that raises as many questions as it answers. As with the math that leads to Jake being 28, Neytiri's birth in the Earth calendar year 2136 and the film's setting in 2154 add up to make her 18, but that's by Earth standards.
Shortly after the events of the Avatar, Jake has the Na'vi give his human body a traditional burial and moves the Omaticaya Clan near Hell's Gate to be close to the human allies who were allowed to stay on Pandora. Two weeks later, Jake still visits his former body's burial site, envisioning himself as a human.
While in the Marines, Jake was promoted to the rank of Corporal and became an elite Recon Marine. He was then assigned to the Marine Corps First Reconnaissance Battalion, but later suffered a spinal injury in an unnamed war while fighting in Venezuela. The injury was severe, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
In the original “Avatar,” actors such as Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Joel David Moore all appeared on screen in their own bodies for significant amounts of screen time.
