At the end, with Barbossa's sacrifice to defeat Salazar, Jack Sparrow returns to become the captain of the Black Pearl, this time permanently. With his crew loyal once more and reinforced, Jack sails the ship while guided by his compass to his beloved horizon.
After ten years of being a cursed ship, with stories being told of a ship with black sails preying on ships and settlements, the Black Pearl was regained by Jack Sparrow after he killed Barbossa with the help of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.
The reason Jack did not initially find himself a victim of the curse along with the rest of the Black Pearl's crew is that Barbossa incited a mutiny, expelling Jack from the ship before they reached the destination of the treasure. Therefore, Jack never removed a cursed medallion from the stone chest.
After Elizabeth helps defeat some of Barbossa's crewmen, Sparrow shoots Barbossa just as Will returns both remaining coins with their blood into the chest, lifting the curse. Now mortal, Barbossa dies from Sparrow's gunshot, and the rest of Barbossa's crew are killed or surrendered.
A year following the events of the first film, Sparrow searches for the Dead Man's Chest, which contains the heart of Davy Jones. Thirteen years prior to the events of the film, Sparrow made a bargain with Jones to raise the sunken Black Pearl and make Sparrow captain for thirteen years.
