Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn Revealed Why Thor Really Speaks Groot. Avengers: Infinity War revealed that Thor speaks Groot's language, but the reason why isn't the one he gave in the film, according to James Gunn.
While there was initial distrust among parties, Thor instantly connected with a few of the members, including Groot. Thor revealed that he understood the angsty adolescent because he once took Groot's specific language as an elective on Asgard.
But one godly connection might technically give one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes an unlikely brother. The revelations about Phoenix and Gaea in Avengers 1,000,000 BC #1 (by Jason Aaron, Kev Walker, Dean White, and VC's Cory Petit) suggest that Thor might actually be brothers with Groot of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Why can Groot lift Thor's hammer?
During a Vudu Viewing Party for Avengers: Infinity War, co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed a key difference between Thor's hammer Mjolnir and his new ax Stormbreaker: the latter doesn't require worthiness. That's why Groot was able to lift the ax, not because he was worthy but because he didn't need to be.
In a moment of selflessness, Groot sprang into action and created a handle using his own arm. While it did save Thor's life and complete the weapon, Groot's sacrifice left a strong influence on Stormbreaker's personality, as disclosed by Thor 4's director Taika Waititi at a press conference attended by CBR.
There's also precedence within the MCU for Groot to swear. Gunn said in a now-deleted tweet that Baby Groot "drops about 50 f-bombs in Guardians 2." They can't be heard since Groot only says, "I am Groot," which is how the director was able to get away with so many uses of the F-word without the movie being rated R.
Groot's language is known to Thor, but he's likely just calling Groot “tree” by his looks rather than his name. In the comics, Groot's actual full name is “His Divine Majesty King Groot the 23rd, Monarch of Planet X, custodian of the branch worlds, ruler of all the shades.”

Unfortunately, as tree people, flora colossi possess wooden larynxes that make speaking very difficult. The only words they can manage are "I am Groot." (The MCU's Groot's use of "we are" during his sacrifice was apparently not a light undertaking.)

This is a very simple answer that a lot of people don't understand: You don't need to be worthy to lift Stormbreaker! Unlike Mjolnir, Stormbreaker was never enchanted by the forefathers to only be held by the “worthy”. It was simply a powerfully forged weapon with near-indestructible properties.
Groot entered the battle against the time-traveling Thanos alongside his allies from Wakanda. Groot and the others bought Iron Man enough time to use the Infinity Stones to expel the invading forces, but he lost his life in the process.
While no one besides Thor has been able to truly wield the awesome might of Stormbreaker, Groot was the very first being to hold this weapon when one of his arms became the handle for the mighty axe.
The Hulk and Banner's previous conflict kept either of them from lifting Mjolnir, but their being at peace as Smart Hulk could change that. That was certainly true for the Hulk, who was shown in the first Avengers movie as being unworthy of wielding the weapon.
Storm breaker is meant to be the strongest weapon of Asgard and could even summon bifrost, says Eitri. But there is no enchantment or spell on it like it was on Mjolnir. So one doesn't have to be worthy to weild it, just the strength to lift it. Clearly Thanos is capable of lifting it.
