Then, there's a shriek from the birds and Cato emerges from the woods sprinting toward them. Katniss hits him in the chest with an arrow, but it bounces off of whatever armor he wears. Cato sprints past Katniss and Peeta, and Katniss sees that he's running from creatures. She turns to follow.
Katniss can see that the creatures are muttations. From a distance, they look like wolves but are able to balance on their hind legs. She follows Cato toward the Cornucopia and starts climbing, then remembers Peeta with his hurt leg. He lags behind and she shoots an arrow at one of the creatures.
Cato is enraged that Katniss has stole in his time in the spotlight has been stolen, and a girl from district 12 could actually be a threat to him. They are both volunteers but for very different reasons. Cato volunteered for the glory and most likely pressure from his upbringing.

What is Cato running from Chapter 25?
Summary: Chapter 25. Katniss recognizes the strange creatures chasing Cato as muttations, hybrid animals engineered by the Capitol. These muttations look like giant wolves but can walk upright like humans.
What: The sneering leader of the Cobra Kai Career gang, Cato's last words in the book are appropriately demonic: ''Shoot me, and he goes down with me. '' The film grants Cato a little bit more emotion.
As he does so, Cato cuts his way through the brush and realizes what Peeta has done. Enraged at Peeta's betrayal, Cato engages the other tribute in a fight, a fight which Peeta swiftly loses, escaping only with a severe leg wound, tracker jacker strings, and burns retained from the fire.
At first, Cato fights the mutts off, as the sound of his sword against the Cornucopia can be heard for a long time. Eventually, despite his great strength and skill, he is disabled, and the mutts brutally attack him for what seems like hours, as he is too exhausted to defend himself.
When they are at the top of the cornucopia, why can't Katniss shoot to kill Cato? Cato has Peeta in a headlock so if she shoots to kill Cato, she will harm Peeta as well.
Katniss and Peta only learn of Thresh's death when his picture is projected in the sky. However, in Mockingjay, the third book of the trilogy, Katniss reveals that Thresh died in a battle with Cato, one of the Career Tributes.
Peeta urges Katniss to run and stays to fight fellow tribute Cato while she escapes. He survives the encounter with Cato but suffers a stab wound on his leg. He camouflages himself into the rocks and mud alongside a riverbank, slowly dying of blood poisoning until Katniss finds him days later.
Their roles as star-crossed lovers help them gain sponsors and survive the games. Once the games begin, Peeta forms alliances with the Careers, which Katniss does not initially realize is part of his plot to protect her. After Peeta tells Katniss to run from Cato, Cato stabs Peeta in the thigh and leaves him for dead.
He jokes with her, whispering that it's okay to kiss him since they're madly in love, but once Katniss begins to clean him in the stream, she can see how weak he is.
Clove figures among the favorites to win the games eventually won by Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), though the 15-year-old knife-thrower meets a grisly end at the hands of District 11's Thresh (Dayo Okeniyi) in a sequence that is both longer and more meaningful in the book.
Peeta Mellark served as Katniss' crucial confidant, seeing as he went through it all firsthand, not once, but twice. Despite the terror he faced, Katniss viewed Peeta as a symbol of comfort and salvation.
While popular ships like Katniss/Peeta and Katniss/Gale generally come to mind first when discussing romantic pairings in the world of Panem, the combinations of couples that fans have shipped are many. One of those ships, in particular, is Cato and Clove (also known by the portmanteau "Clato").
In the 74th Hunger Games, Clove was the only Career tribute who came close to killing Katniss twice — at the Bloodbath and at the Feast, and certainly seemed to have a deep hatred for her, perhaps because Katniss received a higher score than her.
In the film, Glimmer acts flirtatiously toward Cato. They talk and joke around the fire, she sleeps beside him that night, and even snuggles into his arm. However, the relationship is largely one-sided, and Cato leaves her to die to the tracker jackers.
Cato releases Peeta and falls off of the Cornucopia. The dogs immediately attack him. When Katniss realizes that the dogs intend to kill Cato slowly, she fires her last arrow at Cato, putting him out of his misery. His death marks the end of the 74th Hunger Games.
In the film, Thresh's odds of winning change from 10–1 to 11–1. Afterward, they increase from 11–1 to 8–1. In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, Katniss states that Cato killed Thresh. However, this is not in-line with the film continuity, as Thresh was killed by the wolf mutts in the first film.
It is unlikely that Peeta would've won the Hunger Games without Katniss, but he had a good chance. He's physically strong, charming, manipulative, and smart. If Katniss hadn't volunteered, he could've hidden away and lived off donations from sponsors until the games were over.
Feeling no excitement or adrenaline rush or even pride but only fear, not the fear of the games but of loneliness. All that he knew what to do was kill, but now that he had the chance to win it all he only felt dead. No purpose, no excitement. Just Dead.
Though both were cruel toward the other tributes, they had formed an emotional connection with each other. However, in the film, Cato and Clove seemed to have no relationship with each other beyond that of allies.
Steven They cut Madge to save time/money for the film. Kayla Madge does become important in other books though, and she is used in the book to show how Gale felt about people who didn't have their names entered a bunch times for the Reaping because they didn't need tessera.
