At the end of Scream he got stabbed in the back. When he shows up in Scream 2 he explains to Randy that his pronounced (and so obviously fake) limp is the result of a severed nerve.

Undoubtedly! Dewey is a resilient character and has survived injuries in previous Scream movies. If somebody found him in time and got him medical attention, there's a good chance he could have made it. But let's not forget that this is a horror movie, and the writers might have had other plans for Dewey's character.
