Although Maleficent cursed Aurora into an eternal slumber, she ended up breaking her own curse with “true love's kiss” (the mother/daughter spin on the material actually being pretty novel).
When the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on a spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a sleep like death. However, when King Stefan begs Maleficent , she adds a solution to the curse. It can be broken, but only with true love's kiss.
Realizing that she has grown to love Aurora, Maleficent attempts to remove the curse but fails, because there is no power on Earth that can lift it, but True Love's Kiss.
The curse sadly has a no-backsies clause, so Maleficent instead races a magically unconscious Prince Phillip to the castle to kiss the now sleeping Aurora, and break the curse.
