Bathilda Bagshot met a tragic end. She was murdered through the use of Dark Arts. After her death, her body was animated by Lord Voldemort, who used his snake, Nagini, to inhabit her corpse. This was done as a trap for Harry Potter, who Voldemort reasoned would visit Bathilda's cottage.

Nagini was presumably already deep in league with Voldemort before that, but after she became his Horcrux, the two shared a unique bond. They were very close, able to communicate telepathically as well as through parseltongue. Also, it was said that if Voldemort had any love for anyone in the world, it was for Nagini.
Why did the killing curse work on Harry but not Nagini?
As long as Voldemort lives, Nagini is invulnerable to mortal death except by the methods known to destroy Horcruxes: basilisk venom or fiendfyre. It works differently with Harry because he is not a true Horcrux.
