Obi-Wan's guilt over failing Anakin is what drives his character to watch over Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. In a way, keeping Luke safe and then teaching him the ways of the Force is Obi-Wan's way of getting redemption. He feels terrible for failing Anakin, because he believes he robbed Luke from having a father figure.
David Porter provides some great philosophical context to why Obi-Wan would not regret leaving Anakin alive, as it was obviously “the will of the Force” that Obi-Wan be unable to finish him off, and “the will of the Force” that Anakin live on to kill Sidious himself in the future.

Why did Obi-Wan smile before he died?
At the time, it's likely Obi-Wan smiled because he was about to become one with the Force, and he was fine with that after seeing Luke, their last hope, make his great escape.
This could be interpreted as Obi-Wan showing either pity or mercy for his old friend. Despite everything they have been through, the Obi-Wan Kenobi show has firmly established that the Jedi still deeply cares for his former Padawan and remembers him as the great ally he's had for many years.
The scene explains Obi-Wan's explanation to Luke that Darth Vader murdered Anakin Skywalker, because in a way, he did. The dark side of the Force is all-consuming. Once someone starts down the path to the dark side, it can be difficult to return to the light.
They were like brothers, with Obi-Wan practically raising Anakin within the Jedi Order. So when Anakin turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader, Obi-Wan took it personally. He failed to stop the darkness from taking over his Padawan and lost him forever... or so he believed.

Kenobi bested Anakin, severing his limbs, and leaving him to die, burning on the shores of a lava river. Darth Sidious recovered Anakin's broken body and returned with him to Coruscant. Medical droids rebuilt Anakin with cybernetic parts, encasing him in dark armor to complete his transformation into Darth Vader.
The theory was made all the more convincing by the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, which depicts the Jedi defeating Vader using his full power. Darth Vader was the stronger of the two by far. However, as with most lightsaber duels, the victor is the one with the greater connection to the Force.
