Oswin is revealed to have been captured by Daleks after the Alaska crashed on the Asylum and, to preserve her genius-level intellect for Dalek use, was turned into a Dalek. Unable to cope with her conversion, her mind retreated into a fantasy of survival as a human.
The Daleks solved this problem by simply connecting Oswin both to the shell and to the hive mind. She now had the resources of a Dalek, and the rest of the Daleks feeding into her head. However since she was still human, she could still fight it off by hallucinating human stuff, like soufflés and Carmen.
Oswin then learns from the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) that she has been converted from human into a Dalek and has coped by retreating into a fantasy of her own intact survival.

The human-Daleks originated out of the many experiments on Dalek flesh in the sewers of New York City in 1930. These experiments, research of the Cult of Skaro (who had temporally shifted from the Battle of Canary Wharf), resulted in the so-called "Final Experiment" after experiments to grow new Dalek embryos failed.
