Johnny pulls his switchblade, but a weaponless Pony is grabbed before he knows it and shoved face first into a chilling fountain. In fear, Pony gasps for air but realizes too late that he is sucking in water and drowning. Ponyboy awakens on the pavement gasping for air.
Ponyboy runs home, but when Darry scolds him and hits him for the first time, he goes back to find Johnny. They are jumped by Bob, Randy, and other Socs, and during the fight Johnny stabs and kills Bob to stop him from drowning Ponyboy in a fountain.
After exchanging a few insults, one of the Socs grabs Ponyboy and holds his head under water in a fountain until he passes out. Ponyboy and Johnny both thought Ponyboy was going to drown that night. When Ponyboy regains consciousness, Bob is dead. Johnny stabbed him in self-defense.
Pony is in denial about Johnny's death, and keeps repeating that he isn't dead. He leaves the hospital and roams the streets until a stranger picks him up and drives him home. Upon arriving home, Pony tells the rest of the gang about Johnny's death and everyone is silent.
Pony may be thinking that he is equally guilty of killing Bob because he was at the scene. Legally, he could be held partially responsible because he aided and abetted a known criminal when he and Johnny fled the law. Or he may consider himself guilty simply because he is a greaser.
Darry tells Randy that Ponyboy is racked up physically and so emotionally stressed that he doesn't remember what really happened and that's why he thinks he killed Bob. Pony pretends he killed Bob and that Johnny isn't dead because he figured it wouldn't hurt as much.
The hearing with the judge wasn't what Ponyboy had expected. Everyone except Pony was able to tell the judge what had happened that night; Pony is only questioned about his home life. The judge listens to everyone, acquits Pony, and closes the case.
The policemen kill Dally. After Johnny dies in the hospital, Dally is so upset, he runs away from Ponyboy and robs a grocery store. The police chase him to the empty lot where the greasers hang out. There, Dally takes out his unloaded gun and threatens the police, who shoot him in self-defense.
After Johnny's death, Dally doesn't know how to live anymore. He cared for Johnny more than the rest of his family with the Greasers. Unable to cope, Dally robs a store and aims an unloaded gun at the police, and forces them to kill him.
In The Outsiders, Johnny says "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." just before he dies. These final words are a reference to the Robert Frost poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay," which Ponyboy had quoted as the boys watched a sunrise.
Johnny and Ponyboy fled, but were caught near a fountain. Johnny was pushed to the ground, and then the Socs dunked Ponyboy multiple times in the fountain, and he almost drowned. Johnny then pulled out his knife and stabbed Bob, killing him.
Death. Bob was with some of the other Socs when they tried to drown Ponyboy in a nearby fountain. Johnny became scared and didn't know what to do, and he took out his switchblade and stabbed Bob to death, and the other Socs ran away.
While he is there, the church catches fire and Johnny and Ponyboy go inside to rescue children who are trapped. Dally tries to save Ponyboy and Johnny when the roof starts to collapse, and he gets a bad burn on his arm.
As a result of frustration and fear for Pony's safety, Darry had slapped him when he returned home well after curfew. This slap did make Pony run away, thus in Ponyboy's mind starting this whole nightmare: "I bet Darry's sorry he ever hit me."
The Socs then chase the two greasers, catching up to them quick. Randy catches Johnny and beats him down, then helps Bob drown Ponyboy after Ponyboy shows that he was capable of retaliation. Johnny pulled out his knife and killed Bob, which caused Randy and the other Socs to run away.

Sandy was pregnant, and her parents did not want her to marry Sodapop. They sent her to live with her grandmother, to keep her away from Sodapop and so she could have the baby in Florida. With Sandy's pregnancy, The Outsiders highlights Sodapop's sensitivity.
Dally is a criminal who did many bad things, and had gone to jail many times. Dally has been involved in many gang related crimes. He lied, he cheated, and he stole. He also went to rodeos and rumbles.
In The Outsiders, Dally wants to die because Johnny, the only person he truly loves, has died. Early in the text, Ponyboy describes Dally's life, explaining that he really has no family who cares for him.
Ponyboy dislikes the Socs, whom we see through his subjective viewpoint. The distorting effects of hatred and group rivalry make his narration less than objective.
