It's later explained by Thor that Thanos “decimated” the planet Xandar and retrieved it from the care of the Nova Corps. The moment that Thanos finally got hold of one of the Infinity Stones, beginning his quest to wipe out half the universe, seems like a pretty important part of the overall story.
Thanos obtained the first stone, the Power Stone, by defeating the Nova Corps, law enforcement for the galaxy, on the planet Xandar and claiming it for himself. The Power Stone is an immensely powerful artifact that grants its wielder immense strength and energy manipulation abilities.
Thanos retrieved each gem from a being who held it at the time. The In-Betweener had the Soul Gem, the Champion of the Universe had the Power Gem, the Gardener had the Time Gem, the Collector had the Reality Gem, the Runner had the Space Gem, and the Grandmaster had the Mind Gem.
As for why the Power Stone sequence was cut from Infinity War, Starlin told Near Mint Condition that it was due to not wanting to give the movie an Avengers: Endgame-level runtime.
Casualties. The Massacre of the Xandarians was an immense slaughter orchestrated by Thanos to obtain the Power Stone. Thanos arrived on Xandar where he proceeded to wipe out half of the Xandarians and obtained the Stone, which had been under protection by the Nova Corps.

After decimating Xandar and the Nova Corps, he acquired the Power Stone and inserted it in the Infinity Gauntlet. He then used the Stone to torture Thor and to obliterate the Statesman. He also used the Stone in unison with the Space Stone to torture Nebula.
At the beginning of Infinity War, we pick up at the point of the story where Thanos already has the Power Stone and uses it to stop Thor, Loki, and Hulk and retrieve the Space Stone from the Tesseract.
It was used by Eson the Searcher until it was forgotten for millenia in the planet Morag inside the Orb. The Orb containing the Power Stone was coveted by Thanos, who employed the Kree warrior Ronan the Accuser to bring it to him.
Why didn t the universe collapse when Thanos destroyed the stones?
According to Ancient One, the infinity stones create the flow of time. So when Thanos 'destroyed' the stones in Endgame, he reduced it to atoms, therefore the flow of time still exists, as the infinity stones still exist in another form.
His attack was unsuccessful, and was anticipated and immediately thwarted by Thanos, who used the Space Stone to freeze Loki mid-attack. In retribution, Thanos held Loki up in the air by the neck, choking him with the Gauntlet.
The yellow Mind Stone: First seen in The Avengers as part of Loki's Chitauri scepter, the mind stone isn't actually revealed to be an Infinity Stone until Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's the final stone Thanos collects, and it's brutal to watch him take it.

Another theory, posted on Reddit, suggests that Thanos' real goal when he gave the Mind Stone to Loki was destabilizing Asgard so he could get to Nidavellir and have an Infinity Gauntlet made for him. Nidavellir is one of the Nine Realms, homeworld to the Dwarves, and the place where weapons like Mjolnir were created.
