According to Darth Sidious' book, The Secrets of the Sith, written later on his life, Plagueis discovered a form of "immortality" through transference, a Force power that allowed the user to transfer their spirit and consciousness to another body, essentially using bodies as vessels.
Although his body was destroyed when Vader threw him down into the second Death Star's reactor, Palpatine survived by transferring his spirit into a clone on Exegol. This was achieved through dark science that only the Sith knew of, but the process was far from perfect.
Most infamously, Palpatine learned how to transfer his essence into cloned bodies, allowing him to cheat death. If perfected, this method of transferring consciousness into clone bodies had enormous potential for immortality.
Unknown to the galaxy, Darth Sidious was resurrected when his consciousness transferred to a clone body on the desolate planet Exegol, where his followers, the Sith Eternal cult, preserved the teachings of the Sith religion.
Essence transfer allowed Palpatine to essentially hijack another body and possess it, using it as a house for his consciousness. With enough bodies, Palpatine could live forever, but finding those bodies proved to be the most challenging part of his plan.

Qui-Gon Jinn learned to manifest as a Force ghost after death, thus allowing him to retain his consciousness in the Force. Several other Jedi also achieved the same ability, most notably Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and the redeemed Anakin Skywalker.
In addition, the supposed son of Emperor Palpatine, Trioculus, had been crowned, although it was left disputed as to whether it was valid. Emperor Palpatine's official heir would normally be Lord Darth Vader, as he was his Sith apprentice and the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Forces.

History. A dark side warrior with a mysterious past, Kylo Ren was neither Jedi nor Sith, but a product of both sides' teachings. Once an apprentice of Luke Skywalker's, he killed his fellow students and drove Skywalker into exile, becoming a First Order warlord and servant of Supreme Leader Snoke.
